Dream of St Gregory Giotto 1300
Fresco 270 x 230 Basilique

Giotto's authorship of some parts of the last scenes is often questioned, and in the case of those in the last bay (after No. 25, usually attributed to the St Cecilia Master) denied completely. The Dream of Gregory IX is distinguished by yet another remarkable representation of space. The scene is set in a well-proportioned room akin to those in the Confirnation of the Rule and the St Francis preaching before Honorius III. However, the fact that the spatial construction is no longer perfectly centralized constitutes a step towards the artist's later treatment of interiors. Of special interest here is the strong definition of the curtain suspended from the ceiling, which heightens the credibility of the spatial setting.
