St. Francis Mourned by St. Clare Giotto 1300
Fresco 270 x 230 Basilique

Giotto's authorship of some parts of the last scenes is often questioned, and in the case of those in the last bay (after No. 25, usually attributed to the St Cecilia Master) denied completely. No one can deny the greatness of certain parts of the frescoes in the second bay of the left wall. In St Francis Mourned by St Clare, in a better state of preservation han the others, the facade of an Italian Gothic church is shown in the background, one of the first representations of its kind, decorated not only with marble and Cosmati work, but also with sculpture in high relief
