The five scenes from The Vision of the Flaming Chariot to St Francis in Ecstasy
(No. 8-12) are characterized by inferior workmanship, especially in the figures,
though they do contain some remarkable inventions. This painting is impressive
for its depiction of a walled city, which is shown as a vertical mass of houses,
towers, chimneys, roofs and roof terraces, all perceived as components of a
single entity; the large church on the left, seen from the apse end, bears a
strong resamblance to the Pieve di Santa Maria in Arezzo.
