The two scenes on the entrance wall are the Miracle of the Spring and the Sermon to the Birds, the compositions in which the hand of Giotto is most apparent. The Sermon to the Birds, on the other side of the doorway, provides an obvious foil for the Miracle of the Spring. The former is set on an open plain, where the figures are overshadowed by tall trees, while the vegetation in the latter consists of the wild scrub of the Mediterranean region, which must have been typical of the uncultivated uplands in Giotto's day. In the Miracle, it is interesting to point out the amazing precision with which the ass's packsaddle has been rendered.
