Apparition at Arles
Giotto, 1297-99
Fresco, 270 x 200
Basilique

The four scenes in the first bay of the left wall deal with the last events in the saint's life, and are among the most fascinating in the cycle. In the Apparition at Arles we are given a remarkable oblique view of the chapter-house, its back wall divided by three openings. The massive figures of the friars seen from behind anticipate certain features of the Paduan Lamentation. The variety of attitude among the friars, the variety of colour of their habits, and the massive figure of St Anthony on the left, are among the most memorable aspects of this work. .
